It might have cold and grey outside but it was certainly hot in the Wairapapa SuperGrans kitchen recently when the Mayors of Masterton, Carterton and South Wairararapa went head to head at the annual Wairarapa Celebrity Cook Off. Showcasing the fabulous new kitchen facilities at the Wairarapa Community House, our "celebs" were challenged to prepare, cook and serve a breakfast and a dinner for two adults and two children using items found in an average food parcel.
With all three kitted out in aprons, it was Masterton Mayor, Garry Daniell proved to be unflappable and went about this tasks very calmly and methodically while the ever affable Ron Mark did his best to distract the judges with a witty repartie and manic kitchen skills. Adrienne Staples was a master multitasker and showed true skills with the creation of a lovely fejoia crumble.
MC for the challenge - Craig Cooper made sure it was true to life by throwing in some random situations that occur in households everyday - we all felt for Adriennes daughter who was told to "hang on dear.. Mummy's coming" when faced with the scenario of having a child wanting to go to the toilet...now !!
All three presented some excellent dishes within the allotted time space but it was Ron Mark who narrowly defeated Garry and Adrienne to take this years title.
The cook off aids the community in raising awareness of the local Food Bank and show how, with a little imagination, healthy and satisfying meals can be created using the items found in a food parcel.
